Haydn: Quartet in F Minor, opus 20 #5

The unusual key and intensity of this quartet set it apart as one of Haydn's most expressive early works.  Indeed, one senses the seeds of Romanticism here.  By this time, the "Father of the String Quartet" has attained full mastery of the form, and all four instruments participate fully in the musical conversation.

Schubert:  Quartet in Eb Major, D. 87
At age 16, Schubert had already written 86 works by the time he created this gem.  First performed privately at Franz's home, the work has acquired the nickname "Haushaltung" or "Household" Quartet (who knew?).  It is replete with charm, energy and great tunes, not to mention a certain amount of quirkiness (the "hiccup pickup" in the Scherzo, for instance).  The piece's relative brevity (for Schubert, anyway) makes it a perfect choice for our one-day endeavor.

The Workshops take place from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and include:
  • One-on-one coaching in quartet format
  • Talk by Dr. David Clampitt, musicologist at Ohio State University,
on historical and theoretical aspects of the work
  • Performance of each work studied by the Manhattan String Quartet
The one-day, all inclusive price of $195 for each workshop does include lunch.
Due to the individual nature of the coaching and master classes, each workshop is limited to 40 participants.
